Why we monitor what we build

5 min read

Most conversations about software focus on launch. Fewer focus on month three, when the thing is live and quietly either holding up or starting to strain. That's the gap our custom application monitoring closes, and it's worth explaining why it's custom at all.

Standard monitoring tools cover most needs fine: uptime, error logging, generic dashboards. But for the more specialised systems we build (including AI-powered features, where "is the model behaving as expected" is its own kind of monitoring question), no off-the-shelf tool matches what actually needs watching. So we build the monitoring to fit the system, the same way we built the system to fit the business.

This is only available as part of an ongoing Support agreement, deliberately: monitoring only means something if someone is watching it and able to act. When a client stays with us for support, application health and performance monitoring becomes part of that relationship.

It connects back to the theme running through this series: sometimes the right answer really is a custom build, because the specific requirement doesn't have an off-the-shelf answer. Monitoring is a small, concrete example, and one more reason Support isn't an afterthought tacked onto Development. It's where a lot of the long-term value lives.
